Why are malasadas so popular on Maui? Isn't it just a donut? Not quite!

Discovering the Sweet Joy of Malasadas on Maui

A box of Maui’s famous malasadas, golden and fluffy, coated in sugar and powdered sugar, offers a sweet taste of Hawaii’s flavors.

Whether you’re planning your first or your tenth trip to Maui, one experience you need to plan on is malasadas—the pillowy, sugar-coated treats that are a staple in the islands’ culinary landscape. Originating from Portugal, malasadas have become a beloved part of Hawaiian culture, and nowhere is this love more evident than on the island of Maui where they are tucked into local bakeries and the featured focus of food trucks.

What are malasadas?

Malasadas are Portuguese deep-fried doughnuts without a hole, often coated in granulated sugar. While they’re delicious in their simplest form, many shops have taken these treats to the next level by filling them with custards, jams, or other sweet surprises. Popular fillings include haupia (coconut pudding), lilikoi (passion fruit), and chocolate. In the late 19th century, Portuguese immigrants came to work on the Hawaiian sugar plantations and brought their malasada recipes with them. Today, the malasada is considered a quintessential Hawaiian treat that is loved by both locals and visitors.

Local Tip from Dennis and Lara: When we vacation on Maui, the first person awake picks up fresh malasadas for the group to enjoy with coffee. Going first thing in the morning ensures that they’re actually available!

Why you want a malasada:

Memories are made on Maui when new experiences are enjoyed with the ones you love. Malasadas are unlike any other donut you’ve had— pillowy, not-too-sweet, and comforting in their simplicity.

When you bite into a malasada, you’re not just tasting sugar and dough; you’re experiencing the essence of Maui’s welcoming spirit. Sharing malasadas with loved ones or striking up a conversation with locals while in line at a bakery can create lasting memories and connections.

Where to find malasadas:

1) Sugar Beach Bake Shop (Kihei): Located near north Kihei, this bake shop is a convenient stop for those exploring the island’s south shore. Their malasadas often come with a gourmet twist in their choice of fillings and sugars, while their classic Malasada is made   fresh and hot for you. Be one of the first in lines to guarantee your malasada experience, as they sell out quickly!
2) T Komoda Store & Bakery (Makawao): A historic bakery in Upcountry Maui, Komoda’s malasadas are legendary. Known for their light, fluffy texture and perfect sugar coating, these malasadas are worth the drive.
3) Home Maid Bakery (Wailuku): This local favorite has been serving freshly made malasadas for decades. Their classic sugar-coated malasadas are a must-try, but they also offer innovative flavors.
4) Manuela Malasada (Kahului) This fun food truck is conveniently located close to the airport, across from Costco, and offers a very expansive list of fillings. While their options may not be traditional, they are certainly creative and adventurous!

Tips for the perfect malasada experience

  • Eat them fresh: Malasadas are best enjoyed the day they’re made, ideally immediately after being fried.

  • Be prepared to wait: At popular spots, there’s often a line, but the wait is worth it.

  • Bring cash: Some smaller bakeries and food trucks may not accept credit cards.

  • Try different flavors: Don’t hesitate to sample a variety of fillings and sugars to find your favorite.

A sweet memory to take home

For many visitors, malasadas quickly become a Maui tradition. Whether you’re savoring them on a beachside picnic or enjoying them with family and friends, these sweet treats offer a taste of Hawaii’s rich cultural tapestry. But more importantly, they offer a taste of aloha—a reminder of the kindness, warmth, and connections that make Maui so special.

So, the next time you’re on Maui, indulge in a malasada (or three). It’s not just a dessert—it’s a delicious piece of island history and a heartfelt expression of aloha.
