Top 5 Things You Must Experience in Cannon Beach, Oregon
There’s something quietly unforgettable about Cannon Beach. The pace slows, the air smells like salt and pine, and every view seems worthy of a photograph. As locals who spend countless days exploring this stretch of coastline, we’ve come to appreciate that the most meaningful experiences here aren’t rushed — they’re savored. Visitors often arrive for the scenery, but return again and again for the feeling of connection that this place inspires.
Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning to favorite traditions, these are the five experiences that truly define Cannon Beach.
1. See Haystack Rock at Low Tide
Haystack Rock is the visual anchor of the coastline and a true icon of the Pacific Northwest. Rising 235 feet above the shoreline, this dramatic sea stack has a presence that changes throughout the day — glowing in golden light at sunrise, framed by coastal mist in the afternoon, and silhouetted against vivid sunsets in the evening. It’s easy to see why it’s considered to be on the most-photographed spots in Oregon!

Families often find themselves lingering longer than planned, captivated by the tiny details hidden among the rocks.
From April through July, tufted puffins nest on Haystack Rock, making it one of the most accessible places in the United States to observe these colorful seabirds in their natural habitat. Watching puffins fly in with small fish tucked in their beaks is a memory that stays with many visitors long after their trip ends.
Local tips: Check tide tables in advance and plan your visit within an hour of the lowest tide for the best tidepool viewing. Low tide at sunset is the perfect combination for sunset photos that have the reflection of Haystack in the wet sand. End your evening with a bonfire in front of Haystack Rock!
Our Favorite Beach Access Points
There are a couple of beach access points that you can use to walk to Haystack Rock! If you are in the heart of Cannon Beach, you can use the stairs right beyond Insomnia Coffee on 2nd Street to access the beach (because who doesn’t want a coffee for their beach walk?!). If you need an ADA-accessible ramp or want to park closer to the Rock, try Tolovana Park at the very southern end of Cannon Beach (next to much-loved Mo’s Chowder!) If you are going to Haystack Rock in the morning, Sealevel Coffee is an easy walk from Tolovana Park.
2. Take in the View from Ecola Point
A short scenic drive north leads to Ecola State Park, home to one of the most breathtaking viewpoints on the entire Oregon Coast. From Ecola Point, visitors are treated to sweeping views of forested headlands, rugged cliffs, and miles of uninterrupted shoreline stretching south toward Cannon Beach.
The perspective from above offers a deeper appreciation of the region’s natural beauty — waves tracing patterns in the sand, seabirds gliding on ocean breezes, and coastal forests meeting the Pacific Ocean in dramatic fashion. On clear days, the layered blues and greens of the landscape seem almost painted.

Local tip: Bring binoculars if you have them — migrating whales are occasionally visible from this vantage point.
How to Get There & How to Make the Most of Your Paid Parking
To get to Ecola State Park from Cannon Beach, drive north through Cannon Beach. At the 4-way stop at the RV park, turn west and then turn north a couple blocks down at the state park sign. Parking now costs $10/day and will give you access to Ecola Point and Indian Beach. We highly recommend taking time to do the hike between the two locations!

Local tip: At the beginning of your stay, be sure to check coffee shop days of operation, as some coastal coffee shops are closed for a couple of mid-week days each week or may close earlier in the day than you expect!
