Hand-Carved Koa Paddles
As you enter Makena Surf C-107, two stunning hand-carved koa paddles by local artist Calisto Palos, Jr. greet you. These paddles honor the traditional Hawaiian art of outrigger canoeing—a practice passed down through generations.
Dennis personally selected the rare koa wood from Calisto’s workshop. The craftsmanship reflects the strength and beauty of Hawaiian heritage. The gleaming finish highlights the deep, lustrous grain unique to koa, one of the world’s most precious hardwoods.
Fun Fact: Historically reserved for Hawaiian royalty, koa wood’s richness and heritage make these paddles not only art pieces but symbols of the island’s deep connection to its past.
Harbor Calm by Joseph Fletcher
Joseph Fletcher’s “Harbor Calm” lovingly captures the heritage of Lahaina’s historic harbor. His mastery of plein-air painting—studying the scene directly to bring its natural essence to life—is evident in every brushstroke. Installed in the open living space, this painting offers a moment of calm reflection throughout your stay.
The piece’s historical significance has only deepened, as it offers a poignant connection to Lahaina before the devastating 2023 Hawai’i Maui fire changed its landscape. Whether dining or relaxing, “Harbor Calm” is a gentle reminder of Maui’s enduring tranquility and Fletcher’s dedication to capturing the spirit of the moment.
Island Shoals and Coconuts by George Eguchi
George Eguchi’s “Island Shoals and Coconuts” graces the guest bedroom, transforming it into a peaceful retreat. His signature palette knife technique brings vibrant texture and depth to each stroke, creating a scene that feels alive. You can almost sense the gentle breeze swaying the coconut palms and hear the rhythmic waves caressing the shore.
This piece captures the essence of Maui’s natural beauty, providing a calming backdrop to your restful nights. Eguchi’s ability to evoke emotion through bold, textured strokes makes you feel deeply connected to the island’s landscapes.
