Top 10 Things to Do on Maui for Your First Visit

Your first trip to Maui is unforgettable. The colors feel richer, the air warmer, and the island has a way of pulling you into its rhythm almost instantly. If it’s your first time here, these ten experiences will introduce you to the heart of Maui—its landscapes, wildlife, food, and culture.

1. Snorkel Maui’s Reefs

Snorkeling is a must on a first visit to Maui. Calm, clear waters make it easy to spot tropical fish, coral reefs, and—if you’re lucky (or if you know where to look!)—Hawaiian green sea turtles. Even beginners can have an incredible experience, and many of Maui’s best snorkeling spots are accessible right from shore.

Here are a few of our favorite places:

  • The Dumps: Snorkeling at its finest!
  • Turtle Town: Guaranteed turtle sightings
  • Honolua Bay: A quiet cove surrounded by Maui forest

Tip: Go in the morning when the sun is up and the ocean is usually calmest.

2. Visit Haleakalā National Park

Standing above the clouds at Haleakalā is unlike anything else on Maui. The vast volcanic crater, sweeping views, and cool air offer a dramatic contrast to the beaches below. Whether you stay near the summit or explore one of the park’s trails, this experience leaves a lasting impression on first-time visitors.

Good to know: We love going at sunset instead of sunrise! You get more sleep, the air is warmer, and it’s just so beautiful to see the color fade into twilight as the town lights below slowly twinkle.

3. Taste Local Maui Favorites

One of the best ways to experience Maui is through its food. Skip your go-to vacation foods and try island classics like fresh fish tacos, shave ice, malasadas, and plate lunches. These flavors are deeply tied to local culture and are often found at casual spots where the food speaks for itself.

First-timer favorites:

  • Fish tacos with fresh-caught mahi

  • Shave ice on a warm afternoon

  • Malasadas—soft, sugar-dusted Portuguese donuts

  • Kalua pork and teriyaki chicken plates

4. Drive the Road to Hāna (or Part of It)

You don’t need to complete the entire Road to Hāna to enjoy it. Even driving partway rewards you with waterfalls, bamboo forests, ocean cliffs, and scenic pull-offs that feel like hidden discoveries. Take your time, stop often, and enjoy the views.

Tip: Start early and plan fewer stops for a more relaxed experience. And always stop for roadside banana bread!

5. Go Find a Sea Turtle

For many first-time visitors, seeing a Hawaiian green sea turtle in the wild is a lifelong memory. Snorkeling in Maui’s clear waters offers an incredible window into reef life—colorful fish, coral formations, and turtles gliding effortlessly below. But you don’t have to get wet to see a sea turtle! Ho’okipa Beach is our favorite spot to see turtles sleeping in the sun.

Respect reminder: Admire turtles from a distance and never touch or chase them.

6. Go Whale Watching (Seasonal)

If you’re visiting between December and April, whale watching is unforgettable. Humpback whales migrate to Maui’s waters, and seeing them breach or slap the surface is a highlight for many first-time visitors. Whether you prefer a large and steady whale watching vessel or a more intimate and speedy pontoon boat, Maui whale watching tours have an experience for everyone!

And if you keep your eyes on the ocean, you will spot them from shore without trying- even from your lanai!

7. Visit a Local Market

Maui’s farmers markets offer a true taste of the island—fresh fruit, locally grown produce, flowers, and handmade art. It’s a fun, low-key way to connect with local artisans and discover flavors and designs you won’t find back home.

A few of our favorites:

Don’t miss: Fresh pineapple, apple bananas, and locally made treats

8. Walk a Coastal Trail

Maui’s coastal walks combine ocean views, lava rock formations, and sea breezes into one unforgettable experience. These walks are approachable, scenic, and perfect for spotting turtles, whales, and Maui birds.

9. Learn About Hawaiian History & Culture

Understanding Maui’s past adds depth to everything you experience on the island. Visiting historical towns, cultural sites, or small museums helps first-time visitors appreciate Hawaiian traditions, storytelling, and the deep connection between land and people. And be sure to search out hands-on activities that immerse you in the traditions of the island!

10. Explore a Historic Maui Town

Spend time wandering a historic town where local shops, galleries, and eateries reflect Maui’s character. These towns offer a slower, more personal way to experience the island beyond beaches and resorts—and often lead to some of the most memorable moments of a trip.

Our favorite to explore is Makawao, a historic cowboy town located on the northwest slope of Haleakalā.

Leave Enough to Come Back!

Your first visit to Maui is about discovery—new landscapes, new flavors, and new experiences that stay with you long after you leave. These ten activities offer a well-rounded introduction to the island and set the stage for many return visits to come.

You won’t be able to see it all, eat it all, or experience it all in one visit. Your first time on Maui will unlock a desire to return and experience even more of what this island has to offer!
