The Best of Cannon Beach Activities
Welcome! We’re Dennis and Lara, the father-daughter team behind two luxury vacation homes in Arch Cape, which is a quick drive from Cannon Beach. Our love for this place runs deep, and we’ve always been drawn to its rugged beauty, old-growth forests, and, of course, Haystack Rock.

For years, Dennis has found joy with his family in exploring everything Cannon Beach offers, from discovering hidden beaches to getting to know the artists around the area. These experiences have created countless memories, such as spotting puffins nesting on Haystack Rock, enjoying the vibrant local art scene, and kayaking with eagles soaring overhead and a seal swimming alongside.
We’re excited to share our deep connection to this incredible place with you. Whether you’re drawn to the natural beauty of Haystack Rock, the creativity of local galleries, or the simple joy of a beach bonfire under the stars, we’ve got the insider knowledge to make your visit to Cannon Beach truly unforgettable.

Walk to Haystack Rock
This basalt rock formation is a towering 235-foot landmark that defines Cannon Beach’s skyline. Many people enjoy admiring it from the shore, capturing it in photographs, or exploring its base at low tide.
It is an awe-inspiring experience that’s not to be missed. Your little ones’ faces will light up as they stare up at this natural wonder!
- Be sure to dress in layers—the Pacific Northwest weather can change quickly, and being prepared will make your adventure here more enjoyable.
- For a different perspective, consider heading to Ecola State Park, where you can view Haystack Rock from a distance. The park’s lookout points offer panoramic views of the coastline.
Directions:
Park near Tolovana Beach State Recreation Site, where a short walk leads you right to the sand.
Explore Tidepools
You don’t need to look too far for tide pools if you’re staying at one of our vacation homes – The House at Arch Cape or Arch Cape Oceanside Escape.
Just steps from each of our Arch Cape homes, you’ll find secluded tidepool experiences. It’s the perfect place for anyone who is looking to explore marine life in a very peaceful setting.
At low tide, the pools reveal a broad array of sea creatures. We’ve seen starfish, anemones, crabs, and more all nestled along the shoreline.
- Haystack Rock Tidepools: This is a favorite spot to find tidepools! At low tide, the base of the rock reveals a vibrant ecosystem filled with starfish, sea anemones, crabs, and even puffins flying above! In the summer months, volunteers are here to lend a hand in identifying and learning facts about these creatures that call the tidepools home.
- Hug Point State Park: Located just south of Cannon Beach, Hug Point State Park provides a beautiful tidepool experience. This spot is also of historical interest, with an old road bed carved into the side of the hill that was used to get around the point before Highway 101 existed. A waterfall cascading onto the beach and accessible caves to explore make this park a natural playground. It’s a quieter alternative to more crowded beaches, perfect for those seeking natural beauty and adventure.
- Short Sands Beach at Oswald West State Park: For those who enjoy a tiny bit of hiking before reaching the beach, Short Sands Beach offers a rewarding combination of lush forest trails and vibrant tidepools.
Insider’s Tip From Dennis and Lara:
- Always check the tide chart here before heading out for the best exploration opportunities!
While it can be exciting to experience seeing these beautiful creatures in person, please take care to only step on sand or bare rocks, and to experience the pools mainly with your eyes. The environment of a tidepool and the creatures found in them are easily damaged, so you’ll want to interact with them with utmost respect.
Watersports
Watersports are a favorite among our guests at Cannon Beach, offering both adventure and relaxation on the water. Here are a few of our top recommendations for getting out on the waves:
- Surfing: The first time hitting the waves can feel intimidating as you face the cold Pacific Ocean, but with the right surf gear, a great instructor, and a dash of courage, it’s an experience you’ll never forget! Cannon Beach Surf Lessons & Rentals is the perfect place to start. Their instructors are incredibly patient, making the learning process feel safe and fun.
- Kayaking: Kayaking offers a serene way to explore a calm bay right offt of the might Pacific Ocean. Enjoy paddling along the Nehalem water trail or navigate the bay’s calm waters. Renting a kayak at Wheeler Marina is a breeze, thanks to the helpful staff who ensure even beginners feel at ease.
- SUP: Stand Up Paddle Boarding (SUP) offers a unique way to experience the water around Cannon Beach, blending the thrill of surfing with the tranquility of kayaking. Whether you’re new to SUP or a seasoned paddler, the team at Seaside Surf Shop will set you up with the perfect board and gear.
